Future Earth Taipei

Future Earth is a global network of scientists, researchers, and innovators collaborating for a more sustainable planet. Bringing together and in partnership with the existing programme on global environmental change, such as DIVERSITAS, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP) and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), Future Earth is an international hub to coordinate new, interdisciplinary approaches to research on three themes: (1) Dynamic Planet, (2) Global Sustainable Development and (3) Transformations towards Sustainability. It is also a platform for international engagement to ensure that knowledge is generated in partnership with society and users of science. It is open to scientists of all disciplines, natural and social, as well as engineering, the humanities, and law.

Scientists in Taiwan have long participated in IGBP, IHDP, and DIVERSITAS since 1990+. Representatives from Academia Sinica have participated in Future Earth visioning process since 2011. Even the launch of Future Earth in 2012 was under the leadership of Past President Dr. Yuan T. Lee (ICSU Presidential term 2011-2014). As one of the ICSU's National member, Academia Sinica has been actively taking part in these processes.

Future Earth's future restructuring structure

Future Earth provide the knowledge needed to support transformations towards sustainability. The focus on systems-based approaches seeks to deepen the understanding of complex Earth systems and human dynamics across different disciplines. Future Earth uses this understanding to underpin evidence-based policies and strategies for sustainable development.

Future Earth's Knowledge-Action Networks (KANs) and Global Research Projects (GRPs) are the mechanism for addressing these complex systems, delivering the research strategy and are the essential links to the key focal challenges.

Future Earth develops the knowledge and tools that government, communities, and companies need to meet the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. By understanding connections among environmental, social and economic systems, Future Earth works to facilitate research and innovation, build and mobilize networks and shape the narrative, turning knowledge into action.

Future Earth's strategy

Center for Sustainability Science (CSS) in Academia Sinica has organized a series of events for Future Earth to promote sustainability science. CSS is closely collaborating with Future Earth Global Hub, Future Earth in Asia, and Future Earth KANs in capacity building programs and actively engaging in these international activities.

Future Earth Global Secretariat Hub (GSH) Taipei

The GSHs are distributed secretariat offices for Future Earth. The GSH Taipei is hosted by Center for Sustainability Science, Academia Sinica. It's vision is to join the global endeavor in advancing sustainability science for a sustainable and equitable world by supporting Future Earth. It aims to:

  • assist in implementing activities and strategies, work together with other Global Secretariat Hubs, support Global Research Networks activities, and establish a platform to stimulate new initiatives;
  • collaborate with Future Earth regional entities to strengthen Global Research Networks interactions, organize capacity-building programs, and expand scientist/stakeholder networks, especially in Asia and the Pacific;
  • collaborate with Future Earth Taipei to promote Future Earth’s activities, bridge Asian scientists to Global Research Networks, and cultivate early-career researchers and practitioners in sustainability science.

Future Earth Taipei

The National Committee of Future Earth, Academia Sinica, Taipei (Future Earth Taipei) was established in October 2015. CSS assists the operation of the Secretariat of Future Earth Taipei. The regular meetings of Future Earth Taipei include the Annual Symposium of Future Earth Taipei and the Standing Committee Meetings twice a year. The planned activities of Future Earth Taipei are discussed and approved in these meetings. The 4th Future Earth Taipei committee members were appointed in November, 2021. The committee includes 33 members from various disciplines and stakeholders.

With assistance by CSS, Future Earth Taipei has established 11 working groups (WGs) particularly corresponding to Future Earth's 8 KANs, one Initiative, and the Early Careers.
